Terms of Use

Last updated: August 2026

Welcome to VRChem. By accessing or using our website, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. Please read them carefully.

About VRChem

VRChem is a free educational tool developed by the Neil Garg Lab at UCLA. It allows users to visualize and interact with molecular structures in virtual reality. The service is provided for educational and research purposes.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old (or 16 in regions where the applicable minimum age is higher, e.g. some EU member states) to create an account. Children below that age may use VRChem only through a parent, legal guardian, or school account holder who agrees to these Terms on their behalf and obtains any required parental consent. Schools and educators using VRChem in classroom settings are responsible for confirming they have the authority to do so under applicable law (COPPA, FERPA, GDPR-K, etc.).

Use License

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable, worldwide license to use VRChem for personal, educational, academic, and research purposes. Use within a paid course or curriculum taught by an accredited educator is permitted under this license; resale of the service or its outputs as a standalone product is not. You may:

  • View, create, and export molecular visualizations
  • Use exported content in classroom, lecture, lab, publication, and conference settings
  • Share VR codes with others for educational collaboration
  • Embed the VR viewer in course pages hosted on academic domains (embedding is technically limited to educational sites)

We may, in the future, offer additional features, capacity, or service tiers (for example, institutional, classroom, or commercial plans) that require a paid subscription or are subject to a separate agreement. Any such offering will be governed by the additional terms presented at the time of sign-up; the free tier described above will continue to be available on the terms set out here unless we expressly notify you otherwise.

Restrictions

You may not:

  • Use VRChem for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or copy the service’s software, except as expressly permitted by applicable law or any open-source license that covers a specific component
  • Interfere with or disrupt the service, defeat rate limits, or attempt to bypass security or abuse protections (including App Check / reCAPTCHA)
  • Resell or commercially exploit the service as a standalone product without our written permission
  • Upload content that infringes others’ intellectual property, contains malware, or violates any applicable law
  • Use the service to harass, abuse, or harm others, or to misrepresent yourself or your affiliation with any person or organization

User Content

You retain ownership of any custom molecules you upload or create. By using VRChem, you grant us, our successors, and our assigns a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, process, transcode, and transmit your content as necessary to provide the service to you. We may also use anonymized, aggregated statistics derived from usage to improve the educational tools. We do not claim ownership of your content.

Share links and VR codes are open to anyone who has them — that is what makes classroom sharing work. Don’t encode anything sensitive in a molecule name or shared configuration, and treat a share link like any other handout.

Copyright & Intellectual Property

The VRChem service, brand, code, and original content are the intellectual property of UCLA and the Neil Garg Lab (or their licensors). Open-source components retain their respective licenses. If you believe content shared via VRChem infringes your copyright, send a notice (in DMCA-compliant form, where applicable) to the contact address below; we will review and remove infringing content where appropriate.

Disclaimers

VRChem is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. While we strive for accuracy:

  • Molecular visualizations are for educational purposes and may not reflect every scientific nuance — VRChem is not a substitute for laboratory measurement or peer-reviewed source material
  • We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service
  • Data from third parties (e.g. PubChem) is provided as-is and we do not warrant its accuracy
  • VR / WebXR features rely on your headset and browser; we can’t guarantee compatibility with every device or motion-sickness comfort for every user

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, VRChem, UCLA, and the Neil Garg Lab shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, data, or use, arising from your use of the service. Our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the service is limited to the greater of (a) one hundred US dollars (US$100) or (b) the amount you paid us for the service in the twelve months preceding the claim.

Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless UCLA, the Neil Garg Lab, and their respective trustees, faculty, employees, and contractors from any claim, demand, loss, or damages (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the service, or your violation of any law or third-party right.

Suspension & Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to VRChem at any time if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms, abused the service, or created risk to other users or to the infrastructure. You may stop using the service at any time and request deletion of your data via the contact address below.

Governing Law & Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of VRChem shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there. Nothing in this section limits any non-waivable rights you may have under the laws of your jurisdiction (e.g. mandatory consumer-protection rules in the EU).

Miscellaneous

We may assign or transfer these Terms, in whole or in part, in connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets, or by operation of law, without your consent. You may not assign these Terms without our prior written consent.

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force. Our failure to enforce any right or provision is not a waiver of that right. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and us regarding VRChem.

Changes to Terms

We may modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of VRChem after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms. Material changes will be communicated by posting a notice on the site.
